John McEnroe has been commissioned by the mystery voiceover to tell us what’s hiding behind Roger’s always placid and under control image. Indeed, Federer hasn’t always been that way. In a sculptor’s artistic space, John McEnroe makes an interesting parallel between Roger’s wrath and anger as a young man and his own. He then tells Roger’s tormented youth and violent mood swings.
Projection of young Roger images. We see him at 14 tearing a tarp apart out of rage. We also learn that his coach back at the time, Paul Dorochenko, had to severely punish him because of his mood swings.
John explains how Roger managed to canalize his emotions even though he sometimes relapsed, as in 2009 in Miami. The Miami archive is a rare caught on camera example of what an anger explosion actually looks like for Roger. The sportscasters back at the time were in shock and Roger suffered a lot from this event.
So as a gesture of humor, great players also known for « having lost it » during important competitions will organize this « Smash Challenge » especially for him. Karolina Pliskova, Nick Kyrgios, Coco Gauff, Safin, Djokovic, Baghdatis, Roddick, Rublev, Monfils, Zverev, Tsitsipas, Wawrinka and many others will be participating in the challenge, passing the racket to each other through a montage.
John McEnroe will then give all the broken rackets to great French sculptor Phillipe Pasqua so that he can create a piece symbolizing all the anger held inside the champion.
Finally, French champion Zinedine Zidane will conclude the episode by explaining how Federer’s intelligence helped him surpass his demons.
We witness the first moments of the making of the sculpture.
